Peter de Boer (Den Helder, 1979)

“There is no illusion that we can protect ourselves better against the forces of nature other than to relearn to live with it.”

Artist statement by Peter de Boer (Den Helder, 1979)

I am mainly a painter. By combining thin layers of tempera and the use of oil paint, I create a depth that allows the viewer to enter my paintings.

I mainly paint about the landscape and the sea. Intense experiences of nature as described and depicted in Romanticism are a source of inspiration. By surfing, surrounded by nothing but sea and swell, a view of the horizon, beach and dunes, I experience the moment I see the infinity of my surroundings. To capture this moment, I work relatively quickly and often on several canvases at the same time.

My landscapes are often characterized by a path that leads to the sea. The sea is the destination and I see it as a metaphor for freedom. Sometimes there are people in the landscapes or seascapes. Surfers, beachgoers, beachcombers and maritime heroes; They are the ones who are attracted to the sea.

In Romanticism, artists were so impressed by the beauty and power of the wild that they had respect and slight fear of it. For me, it’s not much different.

I live in a time of climate crisis that requires a new approach to the landscape. Where on the one hand I look for an aesthetic representation of a landscape that evokes a sense of harmony, freedom and infinity, there is also subtle threat and tension that predicts danger. The huts or people blend into the grandeur of the untamed landscape, whether it is the sea or the jungle, or the dune landscape. But in addition to this escapism in beauty, there are also shadows, plumes of smoke, flames or other disturbing things. In the meantime, I am also growing towards a more activist approach.

A common thread in my work are the themes of fragile protection, survival and safety. From cafes to coats, and from tents to protective polar bears, I slowly became a landscape painter.

The huts that offer a roof over your head can be associated with this, but at the same time contribute to a sense of open-mindedness towards adventure, curiosity and discovery. The same versatility can be seen in other recurring themes; Surf scenes represent sports and games, but at the same time a heightened awareness of nature. Or the polar bears, which are both endangered and dangerous.

At the moment I paint more and more animals. Mainly foxes, monkeys, gulls and cats. Sometimes they are ordinary, but they also seem to look at us with questioning eyes. Man, what are you doing? Adapt before it’s too late.
